On June 28-29, 2024, Gia Macharadze, the Permanent Representative of Georgia to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Permanent Representative to the African Union, visited diplomatic missions accredited in Ethiopia (Greece, Portugal, Finland, Uruguay, Brazil, France, Kazakhstan, India, Sri Lanka, Switzerland) and together with the heads of international organizations, the Ministry of Tourism of Ethiopia and the UNESCO office took part in an event held in Axum.
As a result of the civil war that started in 2020, the city was closed for the last four years. Aksum Airport, and this was the first time when representatives of the central government, diplomatic corps and international organizations were able to participate in the Holding a large-scale event in Axum.
Within the framework of the visit, a meeting was held in with the mayor of Aksum, who spoke about the current situation in the city and the region and emphasized the importance of using the tourism potential of Aksum, especially for the peaceful development and rehabilitation of the region affected by the civil war.
The meeting was also attended by other representatives of the Orthodox Church, local business circles and the government.
The members of the delegation visited Aksum's unique archaeological monuments, Orthodox temples, royal tombs, ancient obelisks, which have been included in the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO since 1980.
The members of the delegation also visited the camps of internally displaced persons and got acquainted with the situation on the ground.
